The Theresa Byrnes Foundation
The Theresa Byrnes Foundation (TBF) was formed in March 1995 by friends of Theresa Byrnes, a young woman with FA.
The TBF was established to continue and expand the
fundraising efforts of the FAA and increase community awareness of
Friedreich's Ataxia. The Foundations financial aim is to raise in
excess of $200,000 to support scientific research into FA. These
funds would go towards establishing a three-year postdoctoral
fellowship. Such research would be a vital contribution to the global
search for a cure for FA and other neuro-degenerative disorders.
In August of 1995 the foundation was officially launched by Dr Andrew
Rufshauge, Deputy Premier and Minister for Health. Over the past
2.5years, the foundation has grown into a highly regarded and
effective fundraising group. Through media appearances by Theresa and
a series of events organised by and on the behalf of TBF the
foundation has raised more than $150,000, and can boast high profile
patrons such as artist David van Niven & musician Athol Guy.
The TBF recently presented the New Children's Hospital, Westmead with
a cheque for $60,000. This payment was the first instalment in the 3
year combined project with the FAA of NSW focusing of gene delivery
systems.
